WaterStrategyMan Meetings

Athens Kick-off Meeting

The kick-off meeting for the WaterStrategyMan Project was held in the Central Library Multimedia Theatre in the Zografou Campus of the National Technical University of Athens. It took place over three days, February 7th, 8th and 9th 2002. The meeting was attended by the Project Partners as well as by Dr. Manfred Lange and Dr. Paul Jeffrey, Co-ordinators of the MEDIS and AQUADAPT projects respectively, and by Greek stakeholders.

Syros Workshop

The Workshop was held in the Auditorium of the University of the Aegean in Hermoupolis of the Island of Syros, Greece. It took place on three consecutive days, the 8th, 9th and 10th of July, 2002, of which one day was dedicated to the Workshop and was attended by all participants in an open session, one day to the Cluster meeting, and one day to the WaterStrategyMan project meeting.

Hence, the Syros Workshop served three purposes; firstly, it was an important step in the progress of the WaterStrategyMan project, giving the partners the opportunity to interact, to discuss on project goals, and to address emerging issues. Secondly, it served as the kick-off meeting of the ARID cluster, where initial synergies and complementarities were identified between the projects. Thirdly, it served as an opportunity to discuss and interact with end-users regarding not only the water management framework but also their specific needs and problems they face.

Porto Meeting

The 1st Annual Meeting of the WaterStrategyMan Project was held in the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Porto, on the 16th, 17th and 18th of January 2003.

Paris Workshop

The 4th WaterStrategyMan Project Meeting was held in Paris, France, at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, on the 8th and 9th October 2003. The meeting had a triple character, as it incorporated a Public Workshop, a Project Meeting and a Cluster Meeting into one venue. The workshop aimed at presenting and discussing the results of the Analysis Phase, particularly the developed GIS Decision Support System, at validating the developed methodology and selected tools, to prepare the development of water management scenarios and to train participants on the DSS and methodology application issues.

La Palma Meeting

The 2nd Annual WaterStrategyMan Project Meeting was held in Santa Cruz de la Palma, Canary Islands, at the Caza Salazar, on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th February 2004. The Project Meeting aimed at reviewing and reevaluating the Project progress thus far, and at discussing and elaborating the future steps to be taken. It was organized in parallel to the International Conference on “Water Resources Management in water stressed environments and Islands: the challenge of Ecoadaptation”. The meeting sessions were held on the 2nd (afternoon session), and the 3rd and 4th (morning sessions).

Palermo Meeting

The 3rd Annual Meeting of WSM in Palermo was devoted to the presentation and the discussion of the work undertaken in 2004, and in particular of the analysis of comprehensive water management scenarios in the Case Studies (Paros - Greece, Limassol - Cyprus, Algarve - Portugal, Tel Aviv - Israel, and Tenerife - Spain). The presented work focused on the contribution of scenarios in the formulation of guidelines for improved water management. Each applicable water management option was discussed in terms of:

  • actual experiences, and
  • evaluation results from scenario analysis.

Scenario development and evaluation was based on:

  • The determination of options that can potentially be used in each Case Study region,
  • The application of the selected options separately on the region, and the range of potential application for each option, and
  • The evaluation of each of the option applications with respect to effectiveness in meeting demands, direct and environmental costs.

The evaluation of options will contribute to the definition of alternative water management strategies through an appropriate framework, already applied in the Case Studies of Greece and Cyprus.
